Based on the Population Census Act of 29.3.1869, the first modern census of the population of Hungary was carried out. It was determined that it would be carried out on 31 December in years ending in 0, with the exception of 1870, since it was carried out in 1869. The next ones were carried out in 1880, 1890, 1900 and 1910, from which only processed statistical data without census sheets have been preserved. Houses in the villages were already numbered. There was one census sheet for each house, so we have a much more extensive database of data at our disposal. Economic data were similar to the 1828 census. In each household, everyone who lived there was registered by name and surname. The list also included servants, maids, and serfs, including their dates of birth. A novelty was that literacy was also recorded, i.e. whether the person in question could read and write. Data on property and livestock were also recorded. The sheets were written in Hungarian, but the columns contained text in Slovak or German, depending on the representation of the population in a particular municipality.
Familysearch published images from the 1869 Hungarian population census. The territory of today's Slovakia was divided into counties and municipalities, and cities must be searched for under the respective counties with the Hungarian names of that time. Fortunately, they are sorted alphabetically. Many sheets have not been preserved, such as those from Novohradské. And some have not been handed over. For example, this is the Bratislava County, which is located in 11 boxes in the state archive in Bratislava. However, only a fraction of the municipalities that belonged to this county are there.
The following censuses from 1920, 1930 and 1940 were already carried out under Czechoslovakia and Slovakia respectively. The sheets from 1930 are already available on Slovakiana. Instructions for downloading are on my site.
Remember that the census will not give you any precise information. Expect to get a comprehensive overview of the household and its status, number of people, property, assets, etc. The only thing you can rely on is the date of the census. All information about people is only from oral reports or from observations census commissioner , but also what you just thought.
